How to hunt valakkar

Learn what valakkar are, where the different kinds live, which contracts send you after them in 4.10.2, and what to do with the fangs and pearls you collect.

Valakkar are giant sandworms that burrow under the surface of desert worlds. Hunting them pays through contracts, and the fangs and pearls they leave behind are wanted by Rayari and by Wikelo.

Know your valakkar

Valakkar grow through three life stages:

  • Juvenile: about 5 meters long. They live just under the surface near mineral deposits.
  • Adult: about 15 meters long. Adults attack when their young are attacked.
  • Apex: can grow up to 300 meters long.

There are also different kinds of valakkar, depending on where they live:

  • Valakkar: the standard kind, found on dry worlds such as Daymar and Leir III.
  • Ice valakkar: found at the old QV Breaker Stations.
  • Irradiated valakkar: found mainly in the storms of Pyro I. Their fangs and pearls are the ones most contracts and trades ask for.

Attacking juveniles can bring adults after you. Plan an escape route before you start shooting.

Contract: Reduce Valakkar Breaker Station Population

This is an entry-level cull contract from Highpoint Wilderness Specialists in the Nyx system. The People's Alliance wants the old QV Breaker Stations in the Keeger Belt cleared so they can be repaired.

  • No reputation needed. It is a solo contract and you need a CrimeStat of 0 to 2.
  • You have 15 minutes to finish it once accepted.
  • Completing it gives +100 reputation with Highpoint Wilderness Specialists.
  • It always rewards one blueprint from a pool: the R97 Shotgun, its 18-round magazine, or a piece of Monde armor (arms, core, helmet or legs, including Hiro variants).
  1. Accept the contract in the Contract Manager while you are in Nyx.
  2. Fly to one of the QV Breaker Stations in the Keeger Belt.
  3. Find and kill the valakkar at the station.
  4. Collect your payment, reputation and blueprint when the contract completes.

Contracts: the Rayari chain

Rayari Incorporated buys irradiated valakkar parts for its research. The chain starts with a one-time introduction contract:

  • Interested in Building a Better Future?: a solo collection contract with a 30 minute time limit. You need a CrimeStat of 0 to 2. It gives +100 Rayari reputation.

Once you finish it and reach the Contractor rank with Rayari, three valakkar contracts open up. Each one gives +150 Rayari reputation and can be shared with your party:

  • Gather Irradiated Valakkar Fangs: hunt irradiated adults and deliver 40 adult fangs. Time limit 52 minutes.
  • Obtain Irradiated Valakkar Pearls: recover irradiated valakkar pearls. Time limit 45 minutes.
  • Collect Irradiated Valakkar Eggs: collect irradiated valakkar eggs. Time limit 40 minutes.

The game files do not list fixed payouts for the Rayari contracts, so check the offer in your Contract Manager before you accept.

What valakkar drop

  • Fangs: pulled from the animal's mouth after it dies. Irradiated fangs come in juvenile, adult and apex versions.
  • Pearls: formed when grit gets stuck in a valakkar's hide. Irradiated pearls come in grades from C up to AAA.

Since patch 4.10.1, harvested creature materials drop in graded quality tiers, so always check the grade of what you pick up.

An apex fang is a size 1 cargo item that weighs 50 kg and is about 5.6 meters long. Bring a ship with cargo space and a tractor beam if you plan to collect them.

Trading parts to Wikelo

Wikelo uses valakkar parts in many of his trades:

  • His Trade Worm Parts for Favors? contract turns 12 Irradiated Valakkar Pearls (Grade AA) into 1 Wikelo Favor.
  • Several weapon, armor and ship trades ask for Grade AAA pearls or adult, juvenile and apex fangs.
  • Grade AA and Grade AAA pearls are different items and cannot replace each other.

Tips

  • Patch 4.10.2 included fixes for animal hunting, so if a hunt failed for you in an earlier patch, it is worth trying again.
  • Keep fangs and pearls sorted by type and grade so you do not hand in the wrong ones.
  • Hunt with a friend. Shareable Rayari contracts split the reward and reputation evenly.
